Large Catus #2
Steel Rods, Bronze Rods, and Paint
7 /12 Feet Tall, 4 Feet Wide, 2 Feet Deep
Approximately 60 hours to complete.
Sculpted entirely by hand during the month of May, 2002.
Almost 200 feet of 1/4 inch and 1/2 hot rolled steel was used.
As with all of my sculptures, a tension was built into the sculpture to create movement and vibration. Any slight movement of any one part will cause the entire sculpture to begin to shimmer, shake and vibrate as if it were alive. The main body of the sculpture is made with sixteen 1/4 inch steel rods. Welded in a manner that puts all 16 rods in tension with the others, similar to a spring under pressure.
Over 1,100 bronze "thorns" were welded on to create a "real" catus. The thorns were welded on, then hand polished to shine, especially when the sculpture is vibrating.
The entire sculpture was painted with four coats of rust resistant flat black paint. Then an accent of turquoise blue paint was "splashed" here and there at the whim of the artist.
"I just feel that this sculpture needed some color to put it "over the top"
and give that extra little something.
